Co-Pilot

About

Comerge needed a way to communicate their work process to new employees. After some delibaration it was decided to create a book out of all the wiki articles that were written by that point. The book was called the Co-Pilot, since it would help those employees to navigate projects. I developed a concept based on that name.

The Task

It was my task to create the typography and visual style of the book. Two more people were responsible for the internal consistency of the written content.

Colours and Fonts

First and foremost, I established an appropriate font and colour concept for the book.

Illustrations

I created the illustrations to support the narrative of the book. I explored several different styles.

I wanted to tell a story, most of all. The Co-Pilot became the main character. Alongside the written content detailing how we ship a project, I created the narrative of how a box of precious cargo is shipped to the customer. The Co-Pilot character stood for the book, assisting delivery, and the box stood for the software.

By an almost unanimous vote from everyone in the team, the ink drawings won out over the other styles.

Illustrative Concept

I decided to underline everything to do with the real world process and the team with vector graphics and graphs. The ink illustrations would serve as chapter visualizations, telling the story.

From sketch to ink drawing.

All the chapter pages can be viewed as a flip book.

Prototype

Before the book was sent to the printer, I created a prototype on standard issue 80g printing paper.

Final Book

Finally, a small number of books were printed. I decided to use 120g Olin Rough High White paper for the pages. For the cover I used the same paper in 300g and for the dust jacket on in 80g.

The paper was chosen, to give the book a professional feel without making it cold and unapproachable.
